Northeastern Service Learning Students Return for Another Semester

House of Possibilities (HOPe) began collaborating with students from Northeastern University in the spring of 2022 when we welcomed our first independent volunteer from the school. After a great experience,  HOPe  applied for a Service Learning opportunity at Northeastern which allows students to broaden their skills by supporting a partner  community organization and its mission. ( As part of their coursework, students engage in volunteer experiences with HOPe and now five semesters later, over 20 students have facilitated classes for our Boston group through this program.

The courses that have worked with HOPe include: Social Change and Human Services, Inquiries in Biology, Nutrition and Public Health, and Contemporary Issues in Healthcare. Each week, the students come to the program to lead an activity for an hour or two. hours. Members love working with the students and look forward to their lessons each week. Many of our members enjoy science so it is no surprise that some favorite activities include projects making slime and building volcanoes.

The students apply their classroom knowledge while teaching and leading activities with our HOPe group, integrating both their academic learning and volunteer experience. Some Service Learning students have returned to join HOPe through the Best Buddies program. We are incredibly grateful for their ongoing partnership and the opportunities they continue to bring to our organization.

My experience at HOPe was wonderful. Volunteering in the classroom was one of the highlights of my semester.
